400 Marines Hosted for Thanksgiving

American Friends of our Armed Forces held its 11th Annual Adopt a Marine for Thanksgiving with more than 400 Marines hosted by 175 host families on this most American of holidays.

The day began early when 8 chartered buses arranged by AFAF rolled into the Marine Air Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms California for pick up of the troops for the trip to Palm Desert, California and surrounding cities. The Marines arrived to cheering host families and supporters at 9 valley clubs for a day of fun activities and the traditional Thanksgiving meal.

As the day ended, Marines and their host families forged new friendships and the troops were returned to their buses with “goodie bags” for the trip back to the base.

This year’s valley clubs participating were Desert Horizons, Indian Palms. The Lakes, Palm Valley, Rancho La Quinta, Reserve, Sun City Palm Desert, The Springs and Toscana.

Medal of Honor Recipient addresses AFAF Salute to our Troops attendees

Marine Sergeant Dakota Meyer (retired), recipient of the Medal of Honor, provided the keynote address to attendees at AFAF’s April 11, 2017 Salute to our Troops. Sergeant Meyer is the first living Marine to receive the honor since 1973 and has been inducted into the Pentagon Hall of Heroes.

Describing his efforts to save 13 Americans and 23 Afghan military from certain death, Meyer was both humble and distressed he could not do more. Despite orders to stand down in his efforts, Sergeant Meyer continued through heavy attack to meet his goal of saving everyone he could.

Sergeant Meyer continues to serve his country by partnering with United States Marines to raise funds for scholarships for the children of Marines killed in combat. His efforts have contributed to raising more than $1 million for the program. He also regularly visits military bases to meet the troops while telling of his combat experiences.

World Famous Rhythm Painter excites AFAF Salute to our Troops Atendees

World famous performance painter, David Garibaldi, performed his well known act of “Rhythm and Hue” for guests attending AFAF’s annual Salute to our Troops held April 11, 2017 at Toscana Country Club.

During his act, Garibaldi completed two paintings that were later entered in the event’s live auction. Garibaldi first did a painting of famous golfer Jack Nicklaus and next painted a combat Marine holding his young daughter. Guests marveled at Garibaldi’s ability to do the paintings upside down while only revealing the subject of the paintings when turning them over at the very end of his performance.

Garibaldi performed with themed background music pulsating to his acrobatic painting performance. Winners of the live auction for the paintings later had photos taken with the artist and their newly purchased paintings.

Save the Date for AFAF's 2018 Salute to our Troops & Golf Classic!
American Friends of our Armed Forces announced the charity’s 14th Annual Salute to our Troops and Golf Classic is returning April 10-11, 2018 to Toscana Country Club located in Indian Wells, California. The event’s featured speaker will be Kris Paronto, former Army Ranger and security contractor, who played a leading role in the defense of Benghazi, Libya.

Troops Honored at Military Appreciation Golf Tournament

AFAF held its 8th Annual Military Appreciation Golf Tournament on November 20, 2017 at the world famous Classic Club in Palm Desert, California. Over 80 Marines from southwestern military bases gathered for a day of fun on the golf course, great food and hundreds of gifs for the troops.

The day began with a hot breakfast followed the golf event and a buffet lunch. The Marines were hosted by civilian players and other supporters.  Fred Nothdurft, Tournament Director, led the event’s planning staff and volunteers in their efforts to make this a day to remember for their military guests.

Also attending were CBS 2 News Anchor Kris Long and members of the AFAF Board of Directors.

AFAF Military Support Reaches $2.5 Million

American Friends of our Armed Forces announced financial support for military programs has reached $2.5 million since the charity was formed in 2005. Support for 2015 exceeded $200,000.

AFAF provides a wide range of financial assistance from items shipped to troops in combat zones to program support for military families stationed at southwestern U.S. bases.

Walter VanBenthuysen, President of AFAF, announced 2017 trends indicate the charity will exceed 2016 levels of military support. Read More
